"Do you know what it was like to dance with that snake in a bikini? That's probably the biggest challenge I have ever encountered," laughs Hayek. But I played a part before that was the most challenging part for me because it confronted me with my biggest phobia and that was From Dusk Till Dawn." "But it was not the most challenging one. "Honestly, it is definitely by far the most complex character I have ever played and maybe the most complex character I will ever play," exclaims Hayek.

Additionally, prosthetics ranging from aging make-up, numerous scenes in full body casts, and of course Frida's omnipresent unibrow were heaped upon Hayek. Not to mention that she has to convey the horrible physical pain Kahlo endured as a result of a crippling childhood accident. It's organic to the subject matter and it was absolutely necessary. So it makes you feel less naked because it's not gratuitous. Because in this particular circumstance it is very organic to the story I'm telling and incredibly important to really tell you who this woman was. I cannot tell you how mortifying that was than actually being completely naked in bed with another woman. I would have to push myself out of the trailer everyday. "I'll tell you, there's nudity in this film but for example I did Wild Wild West and while I was never naked in Wild Wild West I felt a lot more naked and embarrassed wearing that stupid costume. While there's a lot of sensuality running throughout Frida, the role is definitely far removed from that of a sex symbol. These films predominantly featured her in racy sex symbol type of roles. Most American audiences are familiar with Hayek from her turn in more action-oriented films like Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Fled. To this end the film is rife with themes of loyalty and betrayal or as Hayek herself puts it, "To me it's about unconditional love and endurance, if you have to sum it up in one word." Ironically, endurance is something Hayek has in spades. At its roots, however, it's really about finding the human quality within these epic characters, the types of qualities that everybody can relate to. Sure, on the surface the film chronicles the epic lives of Frida, her husband Diego Rivera, and the colorful cast of characters that surrounded them during their lifetime. More than seven years in the making, Hayek not only stars in the lead role, but also produced the film, which is much more than just the story of famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
